All four models use Canon’s C-EXV 1001 range, listed on Canon’s own specification as Toner 1001 BK/C/M/Y. Black is rated at approximately 63,000 pages and each colour at 54,500 pages at 5% coverage. There is also a lower-capacity colour set, C-EXV 1001L, at 24,000 pages per colour; black is a single capacity across both. Each colour is a separate cartridge, so you replace only the one that runs out.

Speed is the only real difference. The C5140 runs at 40 ppm, the C5150 at 50, the C5160 at 60 and the C5170 at 70, with first-copy-out falling from about 4.1 seconds on the C5140 to 2.7 on the C5170. Every other specification on this page - 1,200-sheet standard paper capacity, the same finishers and cassettes, the same C-EXV 1001 toner, the same security platform, the same 105 kg chassis - is shared across all four. No - fax is optional on every model in the range. The machines come with print, copy, scan, send and store as standard, and adding fax means fitting the Super G3 FAX Board-AX2, with IP Fax available as a further option. Up to two connection lines and Super G3 at 33.6 kbps are supported once fitted.

The same on all four models. On the network: TLS 1.3, IPSec, IEEE 802.1X, SNMP v3.0 and IP/MAC address filtering, with the fax line and USB port separable from the LAN. On the device: FIPS 140-3 SSD encryption, SSD lock, NIST 800-88 purge-level initialisation, TPM 2.0, startup integrity verification with automatic recovery to NIST SP800-193, and Trellix Embedded Control runtime intrusion detection. Users can log in by card, PIN, picture, username and password, or Microsoft Entra ID, with two-factor authentication available.
