Standalone or rack-mount?
The same protection comes in two shapes. Which one you need depends on where the equipment lives, not on how much power it draws.
Tower
A free-standing box that sits on the floor or a shelf, next to the equipment it protects. Plug the PC, monitor, router or a small server into it and you are done — no cabinet, no rails, no tools.

Rackmount (RM)
Built to bolt into a standard 19-inch cabinet alongside the servers and switches it feeds. Height is measured in rack units — 1U is 44.45 mm — so a 2U Smart-UPS takes two slots. Rails come in the box; the batteries slide out of the front for replacement without unracking the unit.

Rack/tower convertible
Some Smart-UPS ship with both rack rails and tower feet, and the LCD rotates to suit. Buy one now for a shelf, move it into a cabinet when the network grows — the model code is the same.

APC UPS questions, answered
The things people ask us before they buy.
Do I need a tower or a rack-mount UPS?
It depends on where the equipment lives, not on how much power it draws. If your server and switches sit in a 19-inch cabinet, choose a rack-mount UPS so it bolts in beside them. If there is no cabinet — a desk, a reception counter, a small-office server corner — choose a tower. If you are not sure yet, a rack/tower convertible model such as Smart-UPS X or Smart-UPS SRT does both.
Will a 1000 VA UPS run 1000 watts of equipment?
No. VA is apparent power; watts is the real power the UPS can deliver, and it is lower — often between 60% and 100% of the VA figure depending on the model. Add up the watts of everything you will plug in, leave about a quarter spare, and compare that with the watt rating of the UPS, not the VA. Our VA, W, V, Wh guide has a converter.
How long will a UPS keep my equipment running?
It depends on the load and the battery. Most office UPS units are sized for a few minutes at full load — enough to ride through a short cut or shut servers down cleanly — and run longer at lighter loads. For longer outages, Smart-UPS X and Smart-UPS SRT take external battery packs. The guide includes a runtime estimator.
What is the difference between line-interactive and on-line (double-conversion)?
A line-interactive UPS feeds the load from mains, corrects sags and surges with automatic voltage regulation, and switches to battery within a few milliseconds when power fails — that is Back-UPS, Easy UPS and most Smart-UPS. An on-line double-conversion UPS runs the load from its inverter all the time, so there is no switch-over at all and the output is rebuilt clean — that is Smart-UPS SRT, for medical, lab and core IT loads.
How long do UPS batteries last in the UAE?
Sealed lead-acid batteries typically last three to five years, and less if the UPS sits in a hot room, because heat is what ages them. Keep the UPS in an air-conditioned space and replace the battery cartridge when the UPS warns you. Smart-UPS Lithium-ion models use batteries that last roughly two to three times as long.
