First, What "Compatible" Actually Means
Three very different products get lumped under one word, and the price tag doesn't tell you which one you're buying:
Genuine (OEM)
Made by the printer brand.
Canon, HP, Brother, Epson. Matched to the printer's fuser temperature, drum and firmware. Highest price, most predictable yield, full warranty cover.
New-build compatible
Made from scratch by a third party.
New shell, new toner, new chip. Quality varies enormously by manufacturer. The good ones are close to genuine; the cheap ones are where the horror stories come from.
Remanufactured
A used genuine shell, cleaned and refilled.
Keeps the original engineering but the drum and wiper blade are on their second life. Cheapest of the three, most variable, and the drum wear shows up as faint lines or grey background.
When someone says "compatibles ruined my printer", nine times out of ten it was a bottom-tier new-build or a poorly remanufactured unit. When someone says "we've used compatibles for years with no problems", they almost always mean a reputable new-build brand on a mono laser. Both are telling the truth.
The Cost Comparison That Actually Matters
The sticker price is where compatibles look best. Cost per page is the fairer test, because compatible yields are often lower than the number on the box and the failure rate isn't zero. Here's a realistic mono laser example using current UAE pricing:
*Read that last row carefully. On paper the budget compatible wins. What the table can't show is what a 12% failure rate costs in practice: a toner leak that takes a printer offline for a day, a client proposal reprinted twice, a drum replaced early. One of those events wipes out the saving on the whole batch. The quality compatible gives you most of the saving with a fraction of the exposure, which is why it's the one we recommend.
Where Genuine Wins

Machines under warranty. Manufacturers can't void a warranty simply because you used a compatible, but they can refuse to cover damage caused by one, and toner leaks and fuser contamination are exactly the kind of damage they'll attribute to it. On a printer still in its warranty period, the saving rarely justifies the exposure.

Colour printing. Colour matching is where compatibles struggle most. If your brand has a specific blue or your proposals carry photography, genuine toner gives you consistency from one cartridge to the next. Compatibles can shift noticeably between batches.

High-volume workgroup and production machines. The more a printer runs, the more a toner formulation matters to fuser life and drum wear. On an imageRUNNER doing 20,000 pages a month, a cheaper cartridge that shortens a AED 2,000 fuser's life by a third is not a saving.

Newer printers with firmware checks. Some recent models verify cartridge chips at every firmware update. A compatible that works today can be rejected after next month's update, and you're left with a drawer of cartridges you can't use. Check the model's track record before committing to a stock of compatibles.
Where Compatibles Win

Older, out-of-warranty mono lasers. A five-year-old LaserJet or i-SENSYS printing internal documents is the ideal candidate. The warranty argument is gone, mono toner is the most mature compatible category, and the machine has already paid for itself.

Internal-only printing. Drafts, memos, packing slips, internal reports. If it never leaves the building, a slight difference in black density doesn't matter and nobody is checking colour accuracy.

Printers you plan to replace within a year. If the machine is on its way out, running it down on compatibles is sensible. Any drum or fuser wear it picks up along the way was never going to be your problem.

Discontinued cartridges. When the manufacturer stops making the genuine cartridge, compatibles keep an otherwise good printer alive for years.
A Simple Decision Rule
Most offices end up with a mix: genuine on the main MFP and the colour machine, quality compatibles on the two or three older desktop lasers. That's the right answer for most people, and it typically trims 25–35% off total consumable spend without touching the machines that matter.
How to Tell a Good Compatible From a Bad One

Good compatibles carry a brand that stands behind them. If the box says only "compatible with HP 85A" and nothing else, walk away.

STMC is the industry standard for testing yield and print quality on non-OEM cartridges. It's the single most useful mark to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a compatible cartridge void my printer warranty?
Not by itself. But if the manufacturer can show a compatible caused the fault (a toner leak into the fuser, for example), that repair won't be covered. On a machine still under warranty, that's a risk worth pricing in.
Why does my printer say "non-genuine cartridge detected"?
The chip on the cartridge doesn't match the manufacturer's signature. On most printers it's a warning you can dismiss. On a few recent models it blocks printing until you fit a genuine cartridge, which is why checking your model's track record matters before buying compatibles in bulk.
Are remanufactured cartridges better for the environment?
Generally yes, since the shell is reused rather than manufactured new. The trade-off is consistency: the drum and wiper are on their second life. Manufacturer take-back programmes for genuine cartridges close much of that gap.
Can I mix genuine and compatible on the same colour printer?
Technically yes, and many offices run a genuine black with compatible colours. Be aware the colours may not match the genuine profile, so keep it to internal printing.
