When comparing printers or cartridges, most people look at the purchase price. That number tells you almost nothing about what printing will actually cost you. The figure that matters is cost per page: how much every sheet costs you in ink or toner. Once you know it, cartridge choices, printer choices and even outsourcing decisions become simple arithmetic.

Page yield is the number of pages a cartridge is rated to print, and it's printed on the box or the manufacturer's spec sheet. It's measured under ISO/IEC 19752 (mono laser) or 19798 (colour laser) at roughly 5% page coverage, which means an ordinary text document. Dense graphics, logos and full-page images use more toner and lower your real yield.

What this means: The XL cartridge costs 58% more up front, but each page costs about a third less. If your office prints 2,000 pages a month, that gap is roughly AED 1,200 a year on a single printer. Multiply by the number of printers in the building and the "cheaper" cartridge stops looking cheap.

How to Calculate Yours in Five Minutes

Find your page yield. It's on the cartridge box, or search the cartridge model number on the manufacturer's site.

Use the price you actually pay, including VAT and delivery, not the list price.

Divide price by yield. That's your cost per page for that cartridge.

Estimate monthly volume. Most printers show a page count in the settings menu or a printed status report. Note it today and again in 30 days.

Multiply. Cost per page × monthly pages × 12 gives your annual consumable spend per printer.
Do this for every printer in the office and you'll usually find one or two machines that are costing two to three times more per page than the rest. Those are the ones to move light-volume users off, or to replace first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is cost per page the same as total cost of ownership?
No. Cost per page covers consumables only. Total cost of ownership adds the printer price, drums, maintenance, electricity and downtime. Cost per page is the biggest single component, so it's the right place to start.
Do compatible cartridges have a lower cost per page?
Usually the price is lower, but yields vary widely by manufacturer. Always compare on cost per page using the compatible's stated yield, not just its price, and factor in the warranty position on your printer.
Why does my cartridge run out before the rated yield?
Most often because your pages have higher coverage than the 5% test standard, or because the printer is set to a high-quality mode. Switching to draft or toner-save mode for internal documents can extend yield noticeably.
Should I compare cost per page across brands?
Yes, but compare like for like: mono laser to mono laser, and at a similar monthly volume. A high-yield cartridge for a workgroup printer will always beat a small personal printer on cost per page.
