Synology RackStation RS2423RP+II 12-Bay Rackmount NAS Enclosure

Twelve bays, 10GbE built in and two power supplies, in a 2U chassis. AMD Ryzen V1780B at 3.35 GHz with 8 GB of ECC memory, a PCIe slot for 25GbE or M.2 cards, and expansion to twenty-four bays. The RP in the name is the redundant PSU — the unit keeps running when one supply or one feed fails. Supplied without drives.

Drive bays
12 x 3.5-inch SATA, to 24 with an RX1223RP
Processor
AMD Ryzen V1780B, 4 cores / 8 threads
Memory
8 GB DDR4 ECC, up to 32 GB
Network
1 x 10GbE + 2 x Gigabit
Form factor
2U rackmount, redundant PSU

Two power supplies, not one

The RP suffix is a redundant 550 W power supply. One unit can fail, or one feed can drop, and the RackStation keeps serving — which is the difference between a scheduled repair and an outage. Two power cords ship in the box for exactly that reason.

10GbE on the board

A 10GbE RJ-45 port is built in rather than being an upgrade, alongside two Gigabit ports. The PCIe Gen3 x8 slot is still free for a 25GbE card, a second 10GbE card, or an M.2 adapter for SSD caching.

Twelve bays, twenty-four with expansion

Twelve hot-swappable bays in 2U, doubling to twenty-four with an RX1223RP over Mini-SAS HD. Enough spindles for RAID 6 or SHR-2 with real usable capacity left over.

ProcessorAMD Ryzen V1780B, 4 cores / 8 threads, 3.35 GHz base and 3.6 GHz turbo
CPU Architecture64-bit
System Memory8 GB DDR4 ECC UDIMM (one 8 GB module fitted)
Maximum Memory32 GB (2 x 16 GB)

Encryption EngineYes — hardware encryption engine
Drives IncludedNo — supplied as a diskless enclosure. Drives are ordered separately.
Drive Bays12 x 3.5-inch SATA HDD or 2.5-inch SATA SSD
Maximum Bays with Expansion24, using one RX1223RP expansion unit over Mini-SAS HD (sold separately)
Hot-SwappableYes, on all twelve bays
Drive CompatibilitySynology guarantees full functionality, reliability and performance only for Synology drives on its compatibility list, and warns that non-validated components may limit functionality and risk data loss and system instability
RAID LevelsBasic, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, F1, SHR and SHR-2 — twelve bays reaches the full DSM set
Maximum Volume Size200 TiB maximum single volume (a DSM limit)
Network Ports1 x 10GbE RJ45 and 2 x Gigabit RJ45, built in
PCIe Expansion1 x Gen3 x8 slot (x4 link), for 25GbE or 10GbE network cards, or an M.2 SSD adapter
Jumbo FrameSynology limits the Gigabit ports on this device to a 1,500-byte MTU. The 10GbE port is not subject to that limit

Weight11.9 kg
Rack Mounting4-post 19-inch rack with a Synology RKS-02 sliding rail kit. The rail kit is sold separately
Power Supply550 W redundant power supply, 100–240 V AC. Two AC power cords are supplied
Power Consumption114.86 W in access, 42.33 W with drives hibernating
Operating Temperature0 °C to 35 °C (32 °F to 95 °F)
Storage Temperature−20 °C to 60 °C (−5 °F to 140 °F)
Relative Humidity8% to 80% RH operating, 5% to 95% RH in storage
Cooling3 x 60 mm fans with easy replacement, and full-speed, cool and quiet modes
Noise Level56.2 dB(A), measured by Synology with SSDs fitted. This is rack equipment and is not quiet — plan for a comms room, not an office
Warranty3 years, extendable to 5 with EW202 (the extension sold in this region for this class of unit)

  • The RS2423RP+II ships as a bare enclosure. Budget for up to twelve SATA drives on top. Synology's wording for this class is stricter than for its desktop models: it guarantees full functionality only for Synology drives on the compatibility list, and warns that non-validated drives may limit functionality and risk data loss and system instability.
  • At 56.2 dB(A) this is rack equipment, not office equipment. It belongs in a comms room, not under a desk.
  • Memory is ECC UDIMM, not the SODIMM used across the desktop DiskStations — modules are not interchangeable between them. Both slots must hold identical modules to reach the 32 GB ceiling.
  • The rail kit is not included. A 4-post rack needs a Synology RKS-02 sliding rail kit, sold separately, and the chassis is 578 mm deep — measure the cabinet before ordering.
  • The operating temperature range stops at 35 °C. In a UAE comms room that makes cooling a design requirement rather than an afterthought.
  • The warranty extension for this class is EW202, not the EW201 used on the desktop models. Both are the Asia, Africa and Oceania SKUs; 'Extended Warranty Plus' is Europe and North America only.
  • A redundant power supply turns a dead PSU from an outage into a scheduled repair.
  • 10GbE is built in, so the network is not the bottleneck on day one.
  • Twelve bays give RAID 6 or SHR-2 real usable capacity after redundancy.
  • Btrfs snapshots roll a share back to a point in time, which is what actually saves you after ransomware.

RX1223RP

Twelve-bay expansion unit with its own redundant power supply, connecting over Mini-SAS HD to take the array from twelve bays to twenty-four.

D4EU02-8G / D4EU02-16G

Synology ECC UDIMM modules. Note UDIMM, not the SODIMM used by the desktop DiskStations — the two are not interchangeable. Fit as a matched pair to reach 32 GB.

E25G30-F2 / E10G30-T2 / E10M20-T1

Network and combo cards for the Gen3 x8 slot: 25GbE, additional 10GbE, or the E10M20-T1 which combines 10GbE with M.2 SSD slots for caching.

RKS-02

Synology sliding rail kit for a 4-post 19-inch rack, sold separately. Check the 578 mm chassis depth against your cabinet first.

No. It is sold as a diskless enclosure, so you choose the drives to suit the capacity you need. It takes up to twelve 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Synology's wording for this class is stricter than for its desktop range — it guarantees full functionality only for Synology drives on the compatibility list, and warns that non-validated drives may limit functionality and risk data loss. We are happy to quote validated Synology drives alongside the unit.

Redundant Power. The unit has two 550 W power supplies instead of one, so it keeps running if a supply fails or one mains feed drops. That is why two AC power cords ship in the box — run them to separate circuits or separate UPS units to get the benefit. The RS2423+ is the same machine without that redundancy.

Not for 10GbE — a 10GbE RJ-45 port is built in, alongside two Gigabit ports. The PCIe Gen3 x8 slot stays free for a 25GbE card, a second 10GbE card, or an E10M20-T1 combo card that adds M.2 SSD slots for caching. This model has no onboard M.2 slots, so caching does mean using that slot.

Three things. Depth: the chassis is 578 mm deep and the RKS-02 rail kit is a separate purchase. Cooling: the operating range stops at 35 degrees Celsius, which is a real constraint in a UAE comms room. Noise: at 56.2 dB(A) this is rack equipment and should not go anywhere near a desk.
