Synology DiskStation DS925+ 4-Bay Desktop NAS Enclosure

The four-bay Synology for businesses that have outgrown a Celeron. An AMD Ryzen V1500B with four cores and eight threads, 4 GB of ECC memory expandable to 32 GB, two matched 2.5GbE ports that genuinely aggregate, and room to grow to nine bays with a DX525. Supplied without drives — you choose and budget for those separately.

Drive bays
4 x SATA + 2 x M.2 NVMe, to 9 with a DX525
Processor
AMD Ryzen V1500B, 4 cores / 8 threads
Memory
4 GB DDR4 ECC, up to 32 GB
Network
2 x 2.5GbE

Desktop tower

Ryzen V1500B, and memory that corrects itself

Four cores and eight threads at 2.2 GHz, paired with ECC memory that detects and corrects single-bit errors in flight. On a box whose job is holding the only copy of something, silently corrupted data is the failure mode worth paying to avoid.

Two matched 2.5GbE ports

Both network ports run at the same speed, so link aggregation can genuinely bond them for up to 5 Gbps — unlike the smaller DiskStations, which pair one 2.5GbE port with a Gigabit one and cannot combine them.

Four bays now, nine later

Two M.2 NVMe cache slots sit alongside the four SATA bays rather than consuming one, and a DX525 expansion unit takes the total to nine bays without migrating the array to a new chassis.

ProcessorAMD Ryzen V1500B, 4 cores / 8 threads at 2.2 GHz
CPU Architecture64-bit
System Memory4 GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM (one 4 GB module fitted)
Maximum Memory32 GB (2 x 16 GB)
Memory Slots2 — one occupied. Synology requires all modules to be identical and share the same model number
Encryption EngineYes — hardware encryption engine

M.2 Slots2 x M.2 2280 NVMe SSD

Hot-SwappableYes on the four SATA bays. Synology states hot-swap is not supported on the M.2 slots
Drive CompatibilitySynology guarantees full functionality and support only for drives on its compatibility list
SSD CacheSupported with compatible SSDs, using the two M.2 slots rather than a drive bay

  • The DS925+ ships as a bare enclosure. Budget for up to four SATA drives on top, and check them against Synology's compatibility list before ordering — Synology only guarantees full functionality and support for drives on that list.
  • This model takes ECC memory. Both slots must hold identical modules sharing the same model number, so plan an upgrade as a matched pair rather than adding one alongside the fitted 4 GB module. Synology will not provide full warranty or technical support if non-Synology memory is used.
  • The two M.2 NVMe slots are not hot-swappable, unlike the four SATA bays — the unit has to be powered down to change a cache drive.
  • Reaching nine bays needs a DX525 expansion unit, which is a separate purchase and connects through the USB Type-C expansion port.
  • The warranty is 3 years and can be extended to 5, but the extension SKU is regional: in the UAE that is EW201. 'Extended Warranty Plus' is sold only in Europe and North America, so do not budget for it here.
  • ECC memory corrects single-bit errors before they reach the disk, on a box whose whole job is holding the only copy.
  • Two matched 2.5GbE ports really do aggregate — up to 5 Gbps, over the cabling already in the wall.
  • Eight threads handle virtual machines, containers and a busy share at the same time without queueing.
  • Btrfs snapshots roll a share back to a point in time, which is what actually saves you after ransomware.

D4ES03-8G / D4ES03-16G

Synology ECC DDR4 SODIMMs. Fit them as an identical matched pair — Synology requires both modules to share the same model number — to reach 16 GB or the 32 GB ceiling.

DX525

Five-bay expansion unit, connecting over the USB Type-C expansion port to take the DS925+ from four bays to nine without rebuilding the array elsewhere.

SNV3400 / SNV5400 Series

Synology Enterprise M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs for the two cache slots. Validated for this enclosure, and the reason the four SATA bays stay free for capacity.

HAT3300 / HAT5300 Series

Synology Plus and Enterprise 3.5-inch SATA drives. The Enterprise series is the one to price when the unit will run a heavy multi-user workload continuously.

No. It is sold as a diskless enclosure, so you choose the drives to suit the capacity and budget you need. It takes up to four 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, plus up to two M.2 NVMe SSDs for caching. Synology only guarantees full functionality and support for drives on its compatibility list, so check there first — we are happy to quote validated Synology drives alongside the unit.

Memory type. The two are otherwise identical — same Ryzen V1500B, same four bays and two M.2 slots, same two 2.5GbE ports, same chassis. The DS925+ ships with ECC memory, which detects and corrects single-bit errors; the DS925neo+ ships with non-ECC. If the unit is holding the only copy of business data, ECC is the one to have.

Yes, on this model. Both ports are 2.5GbE, so link aggregation can bond them into roughly 5 Gbps of combined throughput given a switch that supports it. This is a real difference from the smaller DiskStations such as the DS425+ and DS225+, which pair one 2.5GbE port with a Gigabit one and cannot usefully bond the two.

Nine bays, using one DX525 expansion unit over the USB Type-C expansion port. Memory goes to 32 GB as a matched pair of 16 GB ECC modules. The expansion unit and the memory are both separate purchases — tell us the capacity you expect to need in two years and we will work out whether to start larger or plan to expand.
