Synology Network Attached Storage

Synology DiskStation DS1525+ 5-Bay Desktop NAS Enclosure

Five bays, 8 GB of ECC memory as standard, and a network upgrade slot that takes it to 10GbE when the share outgrows 2.5. AMD Ryzen V1500B with four cores and eight threads, two M.2 NVMe cache slots, and room to reach fifteen bays across two DX525 units. Supplied without drives — you choose and budget for those separately.

Drive bays
5 x SATA + 2 x M.2 NVMe, to 15 with two DX525
Processor
AMD Ryzen V1500B, 4 cores / 8 threads
Memory
8 GB DDR4 ECC, up to 32 GB
Network
2 x 2.5GbE, 10GbE upgradable
Form factor
Desktop tower

Five bays, fifteen with expansion

An odd bay count is deliberate: five drives in SHR-2 or RAID 6 give you two-drive redundancy without paying half your capacity for it. Two DX525 units take the total to fifteen bays.

2.5GbE now, 10GbE when you need it

Two matched 2.5GbE ports that aggregate to around 5 Gbps, plus a Gen3 x2 network upgrade slot for the E10G22-T1-Mini 10GbE module. The upgrade path does not cost you the M.2 cache slots.

Ryzen V1500B with 8 GB of ECC

Four cores, eight threads and twice the standard memory of the four-bay model, with ECC correcting single-bit errors in flight. Headroom for virtual machines and a busy multi-user share at the same time.

CPU Architecture64-bit
System Memory8 GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM (one 8 GB module fitted)

  • The DS1525+ ships as a bare enclosure. Budget for up to five SATA drives on top, and check them against Synology's compatibility list before ordering — Synology only guarantees full functionality and support for drives on that list.
  • This model takes ECC memory and ships with a single 8 GB module in two slots. Both slots must hold identical modules sharing the same model number, so reaching 32 GB means a matched pair of 16 GB modules, not adding one alongside the fitted 8 GB.
  • The two M.2 NVMe slots are not hot-swappable, unlike the five SATA bays — the unit has to be powered down to change a cache drive.
  • 10GbE needs the E10G22-T1-Mini module in the network upgrade slot, and the two DX525 expansion units that reach fifteen bays are separate purchases too.
  • The warranty is 3 years and can be extended to 5, but the extension SKU is regional: in the UAE that is EW201. 'Extended Warranty Plus' is sold only in Europe and North America, so do not budget for it here.
  • Five bays in SHR-2 or RAID 6 buy two-drive redundancy without giving up half the capacity.
  • A 10GbE upgrade slot means the network is not the thing that dates this unit.
  • ECC memory corrects single-bit errors before they reach the disk.
  • Btrfs snapshots roll a share back to a point in time, which is what actually saves you after ransomware.

E10G22-T1-Mini

Synology 10GbE network upgrade module for the Gen3 x2 slot. The reason this chassis does not date — it lifts the unit past 2.5GbE without consuming the M.2 cache slots.

DX525

Five-bay expansion unit over USB Type-C. The DS1525+ has two expansion ports, so a pair of DX525 units takes it from five bays to fifteen.

D4ES03-8G / D4ES03-16G

Synology ECC DDR4 SODIMMs. Fit as an identical matched pair — Synology requires both modules to share the same model number — to reach the 32 GB ceiling.

SNV3400 / SNV5400 Series

Synology Enterprise M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs for the two cache slots, validated for this enclosure and leaving all five SATA bays free for capacity.

No. It is sold as a diskless enclosure, so you choose the drives to suit the capacity and budget you need. It takes up to five 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, plus up to two M.2 NVMe SSDs for caching. Synology only guarantees full functionality and support for drives on its compatibility list, so check there first — we are happy to quote validated Synology drives alongside the unit.

It is the point where two-drive redundancy stops being expensive. In SHR-2 or RAID 6, five drives give you two-drive protection while still keeping three drives' worth of usable capacity — on a four-bay unit the same protection costs you half the array. Five bays also grow more evenly: adding a sixth drive means a DX525 rather than replacing the whole chassis.

Yes. The DS1525+ has a PCIe Gen3 x2 network upgrade slot that takes Synology's E10G22-T1-Mini 10GbE module, sold separately. Until then the two 2.5GbE ports can be bonded by link aggregation for around 5 Gbps. Fitting the 10GbE module does not cost you the two M.2 cache slots — they are separate.

Fifteen bays, using two DX525 expansion units across the two USB Type-C expansion ports. Memory reaches 32 GB as a matched pair of 16 GB ECC modules. All of those are separate purchases — tell us the capacity you expect to need in two years and we will work out whether to start larger or plan to expand.
