Twice the drive count of a four-bay unit in a 2U chassis under 300 mm deep, so capacity growth does not force a deeper cabinet. RAID 6 and RAID 60 become practical at this bay count — two drives can fail without losing data.
Dual 2.5GbE, with a path to 10GbE
Two 2.5GbE RJ45 ports that trunk to 5 Gbps over existing CAT5e, and a PCIe Gen 3 slot that takes a 5GbE or 10GbE card when the shared drive outgrows that — subject to the slot's 97 mm card-length limit.
QTS or QuTS hero
Ships with QTS and supports QuTS hero, QNAP's ZFS-based operating system, which adds end-to-end data integrity, WORM protection and inline deduplication — worth choosing deliberately on a unit holding this much data.

Need-to-Know
- The TS-864eU ships as a bare enclosure. Budget for up to eight SATA drives on top, and check them against QNAP's compatibility list before ordering — not every drive is validated for NAS use.
- Memory tops out at 16 GB across two SODIMM slots, and 8 GB of that is already fitted. QNAP is explicit that unsupported modules may degrade performance, cause errors or prevent the operating system from starting, so plan on QNAP modules.
- The warranty is split: 3 years on the NAS itself, but 1 year on the bundled accessories.
- The single PCIe slot takes cards no longer than 97 mm — less than half what the full-depth TS-464U allows — so check the physical dimensions of any 10GbE or M.2 card against that limit before ordering. There are also no onboard M.2 slots, so caching and 10GbE both want that one slot and you can only have one of them.
- The TS-864eU is supplied as a diskless enclosure. Hard drives and SSDs are not included and are ordered separately — ask us and we will quote drives alongside the unit.

No. It is sold as a diskless enclosure, so you choose the drives to suit the capacity and budget you need. It takes up to eight 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Check any drive against QNAP's compatibility list first — we are happy to quote validated NAS drives alongside the unit.
No. You can start with fewer drives and expand the storage pool later by adding disks or replacing them with larger ones. It is worth deciding the RAID level at the outset, though, because that shapes how the pool can grow — tell us how much you expect to store in two years and we will size the starting configuration with you.
Yes, in the single PCIe Gen 3 slot — but check the card's length first. QNAP specifies a maximum card size of 97 × 68.9 × 18.76 mm for this model, which is less than half the length the full-depth TS-464U allows, so a card that fits that unit may not fit this one. Note also that the same slot is what an M.2 caching adapter would use, so it is one or the other.
It is a 2U unit measuring 88.6 × 432 × 297.4 mm, so it needs two rack units of height but under 300 mm of depth. Nothing for mounting is supplied in the box — the RAIL-S02 short-depth rail kit is an optional extra.
