QNAP Network Attached Storage

QNAP TS-453E-8G 4-Bay Desktop NAS Enclosure

A four-bay desktop NAS for small-business file serving, backup, virtualisation and round-the-clock surveillance. Intel Celeron J6412, 8 GB of DDR4 expandable to 16 GB, two 2.5GbE ports and two M.2 NVMe cache slots. Supplied without drives — you choose and budget for those separately.

Drive Bays4 bays, 3.5″ / 2.5″ SATA
ProcessorIntel Celeron J6412 quad-core
Memory8 GB DDR4, up to 16 GB
NetworkDual 2.5GbE

Dual 2.5GbE, Not Plain Gigabit

Two 2.5 Gigabit ports rather than the single gigabit port at this price. QNAP’s own lab figures put SMB throughput at 578 MB/s across the pair. They negotiate down to 1G, 100M or 10M, so nothing breaks if your switch is older — you simply do not see the benefit until it is replaced.

NVMe Cache Without Losing a Bay

Two M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 3 slots sit alongside the four SATA bays, so an NVMe read/write cache costs you none of your capacity. On a file server carrying a lot of small random reads that is the difference you feel day to day.

Supplied Without Drives

This is an enclosure, not a populated array. No hard drives are included, and the price you see is for the unit alone. We would rather say it here than have it arrive as a surprise — tell us the capacity you need and we will quote the drives with it.

Warranty3 years on the NAS. QNAP covers the bundled adapter and accessories for 1 year.

The TS-453E is supplied as a diskless enclosure. Hard drives and SSDs are not included and are ordered separately — ask us and we will quote drives alongside the unit.

Specifications are provided by the manufacturer and may be updated or changed without prior notice. AtomOffice is not responsible for any discrepancies between the information shown here and the manufacturer's official documentation.

  • The TS-453E ships as a bare enclosure. Budget for four SATA drives on top, and check them against QNAP's compatibility list before ordering — not every drive is validated for NAS use.
  • Memory tops out at 16 GB across two SODIMM slots, and 8 GB of that is already fitted. QNAP is explicit that unsupported modules may degrade performance, cause errors or prevent the operating system from starting, so plan on QNAP modules.
  • The warranty is split: 3 years on the NAS itself, but 1 year on the bundled power adapter and accessories.
  • The two M.2 slots take NVMe SSDs for caching and are not hot-swappable — the unit has to be powered down to change one, unlike the four SATA bays.
  • Four hot-swap bays plus a separate NVMe cache tier, so capacity and speed are not competing for the same slots
  • Two 2.5GbE ports that negotiate down to 1G, so it suits the switch you have now and the one you buy next
  • Runs QTS out of the box with the option to move to ZFS-based QuTS hero later, without changing hardware
  • QNAP commits to long-term availability on this model, which matters when you standardise the same unit across several sites

No. The TS-453E is a diskless enclosure — the four bays ship empty and the price is for the unit alone. It takes 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, up to four of them. Check any drive against QNAP’s compatibility list first, because not every model on the market is validated for NAS duty. Tell us the usable capacity you are after and the RAID level you want, and we will quote the drives with the unit.

That depends entirely on the drives and the RAID level, which is why we will not print a headline capacity. As a guide with four identical drives: RAID 5 gives you three drives’ worth and survives one failure; RAID 6 gives you two drives’ worth and survives two; RAID 10 gives you two drives’ worth with the best rebuild behaviour. The storage pool tops out at 308 TB and a single volume at 250 TB, so the drives will be your limit long before the software is.

QTS is the standard QNAP operating system and what the TS-453E runs out of the box. QuTS hero swaps the file system for ZFS, which adds end-to-end data integrity checking, inline deduplication and WORM for tamper-proof retention. This model can run either — you can switch to QuTS hero from QTS 5.2.1 onwards. QuTS hero is hungrier for memory, so if you plan on it, budget for the second 8 GB module at the same time.

You can. There are two SODIMM DDR4 slots with one 8 GB module fitted, for a 16 GB maximum. QNAP is unusually blunt about modules: it states that using unsupported memory may degrade performance, cause errors or stop the operating system starting, and that multi-slot systems should use identical QNAP modules. We would follow that rather than fit a third-party stick to save a little.

Not Sure How Many Bays or Which Drives?

Tell our UAE team what you are storing, how fast it needs to be and how much you can afford to lose, and we will size the NAS, the drives and the RAID level with you — including when a smaller unit is the right answer.
