The Reader 8 and the Air 8 share the same OCR engine and battery, and differ mainly in how they connect and how much they store.
- Wired connection only — the Reader 8 uses a USB-C cable, not Bluetooth. For a Bluetooth pen scanner, see the IRISPen Air 8.
- The bundled earphones are USB-C. A phone or laptop without a USB-C audio input will need its own USB-C earphones to use the read-aloud feature.
- DYS Text to Speech covers 5 languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish), fewer than the 48 languages supported for offline OCR — check the language you need is on the shorter list before buying for text-to-speech use.
- This is a line-scanning pen, not a page scanner. It reads one line of text at a time; it does not capture a full page like a sheet-fed or camera scanner.
