The 115 series is designed for the Epson EcoTank L8160 and L8180. These are six-colour photo models — four-colour EcoTank printers use a different ink series and the 115 bottles will not fit them.

The 115 series carries two blacks and the printer uses both. The pigment black is used for text on plain paper, where it stays sharp and resists smudging on double-sided documents. The photo black is a dye ink used for photo output on glossy and specialty media. Both bottles need to be filled for the printer to run.

The grey ink is what makes this a genuine black and white photo printer rather than a colour printer producing greyscale. It gives smoother tonal transitions and more neutral monochrome, which is why Epson includes it in the six-colour Claria ET Premium set.
