It is an average for comparing cartridges on a like-for-like basis, not a guarantee — Canon notes that yield varies significantly with what you print. Photographs, full-page colour and heavy graphics use far more ink than plain text, and borderless photo printing uses more again.

Choose the PG-512 if you print in any volume — it holds 15 ml against the standard cartridge's 9 ml and Canon rates it for 401 A4 pages instead of 220, close to twice as far. For light or occasional printing the standard PG-510 is cheaper up front, but the high-yield cartridge is usually the better cost per page.
