Die-cut rolls come pre-cut to one label size with a fixed count per roll; continuous rolls are cut to whatever length you set. Both are direct thermal — no ink or ribbon with either.

This is a roll for the Brother QL desktop range, not a handheld P-touch cassette. It fits the QL-500, QL-550, QL-570, QL-580N, QL-650TD, QL-700, QL-710W, QL-720NW, QL-800, QL-810W, QL-820NWB, QL-1050, QL-1060N, QL-1100 and QL-1110NWB. If you have a P-touch label maker rather than a QL, you need a TZe cassette instead.
Paper is the everyday material — cheaper per label and supplied in longer rolls, but it scuffs if a label is handled, wiped or gets damp. Film is plastic-faced and shrugs all of that off, at about half the roll length. This roll, DK-22606, is yellow film: 62mm x 15.24m — the colour makes a label carry at a glance, which is why it is the usual pick for warnings, quarantined stock and anything that has to be spotted across a room. If you want the same yellow in paper, that is DK-44605, 62mm x 30.48m. DK-22212 is this same film in plain white.

Film is the tougher of the two, so this roll takes the handling, wiping and damp that would mark a paper roll. What film does not change is that both are direct thermal: the image is developed by heat in the media itself, so any DK label will darken if it is left somewhere hot and will fade in prolonged direct sun. For a label that has to live outdoors or sit on a warm surface, a laminated TZe cassette on a P-touch is the better answer.
